Code of Conduct

Techr events, including hackathons, are for everyone. We want every participant, organizer, judge, mentor, sponsor, and volunteer to have a safe, welcoming, and productive experience, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof), or technology choices.

This code applies at in-person venues, online on Techr (including ideas, team chat, and file uploads), and in related spaces such as event Discord servers and social media.

Expected behaviour

  • Be respectful and considerate. Assume good intent and critique ideas, not people.
  • Include others. Make room for teammates with different experience levels and backgrounds.
  • Respect privacy. Ask before photographing or recording people, and don't share others' personal information.
  • Play fair. Follow the event rules on team formation, voting, submissions, and judging.
  • Look out for each other, and tell an organizer if someone is in distress or a rule is being broken.

Unacceptable behaviour

  • Harassment, intimidation, or discrimination in any form.
  • Offensive comments or imagery related to any of the characteristics listed above.
  • Sexual language or imagery that isn't appropriate for a professional setting, and unwelcome sexual attention.
  • Stalking, following, or deliberate disruption of talks, work sessions, or chats.
  • Threats or advocacy of violence.
  • Cheating, such as manipulating votes, submitting work that isn't your team's, or misusing someone else's ticket or account.

Reporting

If you experience or witness unacceptable behaviour, please tell an event organizer in person, use the report option in team chat, or email [email protected]. Reports are handled promptly and as confidentially as possible. We won't tolerate retaliation against anyone who makes a report in good faith.

Consequences

Organizers may take any action they consider appropriate, including a warning, removing content, removing someone from a team, disqualification, expulsion from the event without a refund, or suspending a Techr account. If anyone is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services (911).
